suicide face book...

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

Aww man. I keep thinking about that young guy that killed himself in the early hours of yesterday morning, the one that used to be married to the guy from Little Britain. Apparently, he more-or-less announced it via his Facebook. I feel proper bad for him. The thing is, I didn't sleep at all last night; so when he was putting the noose round his neck, I was AWAKE. If only we knew each other, or I was still on Facebook, or he had my number, or I had my phone on, or Scotland wasn't so bloody far away! - Cos I was AWAKE!

It might seem like I'm makin’ light of it, but I’m really not. I hope he's at peace with John Coffey (Green Mile) somewhere over chimney tops and lemon drops, somewhere over the ‘Painbow’.

Anyone who knows me knows I analyse the arse-hole out of EVERYTHING! With that in mind, I think I just realized something. Facebook used to make me feel a bit lonely…disparate for the want of a better word. It’s one of the reasons I shut mine down. I found the all-singing, all-dancing Facebook “activity stream” a bit alienating - all those conversations, groups, events, pictures. All that commenting, tagging, adding, poking, blogging: it done my head-in a bit. It’s one of the reasons I decided to limit myself to just one social networking site. That and the fact that I whole heartedly believe there’s a very good reason you lose touch with people - and technology, however well intentioned – should never fight it.

Obviously I’m not suggesting Facebook can “DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH” or that it was instrumental in the suicide. It does make me think though…

  1. This post struck me very much, (as all of your messages) but I totally relate to the feeling alienated and lonelier from seeing so much that "seems" to be so very socially active in the Facebook activities of others. I have kept my Facebook account for now, but I hope my New Year's resolution is to not be so comparing myself to these others in FB who tout how many friends they have and parties to attend.

  2. I spose the trick with Facebook is; to remember everyone else is faking it too…
