Poems from the Ropewalks...

Big Fish
(for Gladys Mary)

Saw manta rays in the River Mersey,
riding the heights of the brown brackish swell -
just the gulls’ shadows as seen from the quay.
I glimpsed mermaids. –– Oh, what a tale to tell…
giggling sirens gliding on the dock,
neon lit; coatless girls full of spirit!
I saw God, arms outstretched and carved in rock:
a lighthouse of bells on city summit.
Spied Neptune on Saint Nicholas’ steps,
a potion in hand from dawn to sunset,
only one Liver Bird watched while he slept;
closer, a drifter –– Keats in his pocket.

In a pool of life, anchored by a motto:
Hope floats, like a message in a bottle.
